Boards must move beyond compliance to strategic stewardship, warn leaders at Future of Governance International Conference
The 5th edition of the Future of Governance International Conference, organized Envisia – Boards of Elite, took place in Bucharest on May 7th, under the theme “The Great Governance Reset”. Leaders, board directors, governance experts and policymakers gathered at the conference to address one of the defining leadership challenges of our time: the urgent need to redefine the role and scope of governance in an increasingly volatile, complex and interconnected world. The event explored how governance is undergoing a profound structural transformation from control to judgement, from oversight to strategic stewardship, and from compliance to legitimacy, trust and long-term responsibility.
Highlighting the constant geopolitical uncertainty, technological disruption, systemic risks and growing public scrutiny, discussions throughout the conference stressed the evolving expectations placed on boards and institutional leaders.

Referencing the latest OECD framework on drivers of trust, Carmen Micu, CEO & Co-Founder, Envisia – Boards of Elite, emphasized that “responsiveness, reliability, openness, integrity, and fairnessare no longer aspirational values, but core governance capabilities essential for resilient institutions and sustainable leadership”.
“Envisia – Boards of Elite was founded on the belief that governance excellence is not optional, but a societal responsibility. Our mission is to professionalize governance where it matters most, in the boardroom. The 5th edition of The Future of Governance Conference once again succeeded in creating a valuable peer platform for applied, board-level dialogue. At the same time, each panel was designed as a true strategic governance laboratory, offering board members the opportunity to address difficult realities with honesty, responsibility and strategic depth, beyond performative optimism or political caution”, continued Carmen Micu, CEO & Co-Founder, Envisia – Boards of Elite.
The conference also underscored the increasingly strategic role of boards in anticipating crises, setting ethical boundaries for emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, strengthening institutional legitimacy and maintaining credibility across generations. Participants examined how leadership today is judged not only by outcomes, but by the quality of decision-making in moments defined by uncertainty, complexity and competing societal interests.

“As highlighted throughout the conference discussions, the era of governance understood merely as compliance is over. We are entering a new phase, ‘The Great Governance Reset’, where the true measure of a board lies not in its ability to follow checklists, but in its capacity to exercise moral judgement, strategic authority and responsible leadership in a world defined by permanent uncertainty and systemic crises.
Today, future-ready governance has become a true passport to sustainable business performance, enabling organizations to attract strategic partners, secure more competitive financing and build resilient brands capable of navigating the volatility of 2026 and beyond. This reset is not a one-day event, but an ongoing commitment to professional excellence, ethical clarity and defensible governance.
Through Envisia – Boards of Elite, we remain committed to supporting Romanian boards in their evolution from compliant structures to world-class leadership bodies, strategically designed, future-oriented and accountable not only on paper, but through impact and trust.”, said Dr. Gabriela Hârțescu, Dean and Board Member, Envisia.
The conference opened with a keynote address delivered by Tina Fordham, Leading Geostrategist, Author and Advisor to boards and C‑suite executives, who emphasized that today’s leadership operates under permanent structural tension rather than through isolated or episodic crises. In the context of a profound governance reset, leaders are increasingly required to navigate simultaneous pressures related to time, trust erosion and rising geopolitical and societal tensions. She highlighted the growing need for boards to confront the “plausible hypothetical”, complex but credible future risks that many organizations still tend to underestimate or ignore.

“Geopolitics has become a major concern for executives and investors in developed markets, who had previously tended to overlook it. Approximately 84% of American business leaders are now concerned about the political and legal climate. Analyses covering the 2010–2024 period show a threefold increase in geopolitical risk events, a doubling of conflicts, and a tenfold rise in trade disputes. This is not a temporary anomaly, but a structural trend in which the drivers of risk, such as climate change or declining trust, continue to intensify, while protective institutions weaken. We are witnessing a clear rupture. To be a successful leader today means being able to navigate the challenges of the times, or the ‘Zeitgeist’, and to develop a strong Political Quotient (PQ).”, added Tina Fordham.
The event brought together international and Romanian voices at the forefront of governance transformation, creating a platform for applied, board-level dialogue focused on responsible leadership, strategic foresight and the future of governance:
