What Large-Scale Digital Transformation Looks Like in Public Administration, Manufacturing, and Telecom – Case Studies from SAP Sapphire Madrid
Prysmian, Ericsson and the General Council of the City of Madrid, among SAP customers who shared their results at the event.
At SAP Sapphire Madrid 2026, the annual event of the German enterprise software giant, three organizations from different industries showed what large-scale digital transformation looks like: Prysmian fully migrated to the cloud in four months and automated 70% of repetitive activities, Madrid City Council digitally manages two-thirds of the city’s tax revenue, and Ericsson is building a data infrastructure to support AI applications in the 180 countries in which it operates.
General Council of the City of Madrid, example of a paperless administrative model
At the SAP Sapphire Madrid event, SAP announced its partnership with the General Council of the City of Madrid for the complete modernization of internal processes, digitizing procedures, increasing efficiency and providing better services to both municipal employees and citizens, with a focus on the financial, revenue management and human resources fields.
The municipality, which has been using SAP solutions since 2004, continues its transformation with the help of RISE with SAP and SAP Business Technology Platform. A special focus is placed on the field of toll management, with the project providing for the integration of SAP solutions for tolling and revenue management directly into the city’s financial platform. Thus, municipal revenues are administered as a natural extension of the financial system, eliminating isolated developments and facilitating a complete overview of the entire cycle – from taxpayer registration and valuation, to collection and inspection. The result has led to increased operational efficiency and the strengthening of financial control, with two-thirds of tax revenues already managed in this system.
As a result of the collaboration with SAP, the General Council of the City of Madrid has achieved concrete benefits, including the complete digitization of processes and the implementation of a paperless administrative model, the automation of routine activities with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, as well as the improvement of the decision-making process through real-time data analysis. The initiative also facilitates the adoption of a more sustainable IT model, based on subscriptions and pay-per-use principles, optimizing cost efficiency and ensuring long-term scalability.
Prysmian – cloud migration in 4 months and 70% of repetitive tasks automated
Also at the Sapphire Madrid event, Prysmian – a global leader in cable solutions for energy and telecommunications and the largest cable manufacturer in Romania – highlighted the progress of its digital transformation journey with SAP and was awarded the SAP Innovation Award 2026.
In just four months, Prysmian completed its digital infrastructure modernization with RISE with SAP, managing to create a unified, resilient cloud platform ready for AI integration. Through SAP S/4HANA Cloud – private edition, SAP Business AI, Joule and SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), Prysmian has built an intelligent platform designed to increase operational efficiency, accelerate decision-making and develop advanced prediction capabilities, already supporting more than 100 AI use cases.
The digital transformation process also comes with concrete results: automating up to 70% of repetitive activities, reducing by 80% the time needed to implement new solutions and shortening the time to market for new products by 50%. Integrated artificial intelligence makes it possible to intelligently automate customer orders, automatically reconcile payments, and smart expense management.
Ericsson, present in 180 countries and responsible for 40% of global mobile traffic, is moving from one-off experiments with AI to deployment on a global scale
Another example presented at SAP Sapphire Madrid came from Ericsson, which showed how it moves from one-off AI experiments to large-scale deployments, building a unified business data fabric architecture, with the help of the SAP Business Data Cloud solution.
The combination of a robust governed database and SAP Joule enables Ericsson to create the framework needed to develop reliable, scalable and globally replicable AI applications. Present in more than 180 countries – including Romania – and responsible for more than 40% of global mobile traffic, Ericsson treats its data as a priority for expanding AI capabilities at the enterprise level.
At the heart of this strategy is a coordinated data architecture, which allows data to remain at the source, being centrally managed at the level of semantics, governance and data life policies. This eliminates duplication, simplifies integration, and ensures consistency of definitions across both SAP and non-SAP environments.
Going forward, Ericsson expects that the data fabric business infrastructure will support increasingly advanced AI scenarios: from automated decisions and increased productivity, to new digital business models, while strengthening customer experiences in an ever-changing telecom industry.
SAP, the innovation partner in all industries
The announcements made at SAP Sapphire Madrid demonstrate how companies in various sectors – from manufacturing and telecommunications, to public administration – are using SAP technologies to transform their operations and achieve measurable results.
By combining a robust digital core with embedded artificial intelligence, these organizations increase their resilience, accelerate innovation, and create new value through intelligent, data-driven processes. Find full customer stories and other news from SAP Sapphire here.
