Orange Romania activates the 5G+ in the Bucharest subway
Orange Romania has launched 5G+ technology in the Bucharest metro. In the stations where the new network has already been activated, Orange customers can reach mobile internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps. This is the first time this performance has been achieved underground in our country. And those who use 4G benefit from an improved mobile experience, thanks to the new equipment installed.
In November, Orange began activating 5G+ with pilot projects in the Preciziei and Păcii stations. In the meantime, the installation has also been completed in Piața Victoriei 1 and 2. And this week the service was launched in Aviatorilor. By the end of December, 5G+ technology will be extended to many other stations on all main lines: Piața Romană, Universitate, Piața Unirii 1 and 2, Tineretului, Aurel Vlaicu, Pipera, Constantin Brâncoveanu.
The fastest network in Romania is now getting even faster. The operator aims to ensure uninterrupted connectivity at high speeds, no matter where Orange customers are on the metro. Therefore, the coverage does not only target stations, but also tunnels. At the same time, the modernization works will ensure more stable services for those on the older 4G technology. The benefits of 5G+ are obvious: applications, websites and smart devices at home can be accessed almost instantly, large files can be transmitted much faster, video streaming and video calls maintain their quality, even on the move. But the biggest benefit is for those who use the Bucharest metro for transportation between work and home. Travelers on the Orange network will have a much more stable connection even from the road, as the new technology will be implemented across the entire underground map. This approach supports Orange’s promise to be not only the fastest network in Romania, but also the operator that connects people to everything they love to do, under the message “The #1 network for your passions”.
5G/5G+ technology is also much more environmentally friendly. The more users there are on 5G+, the lower the power consumption per Mb of traffic. In fact, the new technology can be up to 10 times more efficient for the same amount of traffic than the previous ones. At the same time, this modern network has the ability to enter “economy mode” when it is not used intensively. On the metro, for example, traffic can decrease substantially outside peak periods and especially at night, when only maintenance, cleaning and security workers need connectivity, and 5G+ technology can be even more economical during this period.
Orange Romania intends to cover the entire Bucharest metro with 5G+ by the end of 2026. These plans are part of the strategy to expand and improve networks with the best technologies, as it is the operator with the largest investment in the 5G/5G+ spectrum in Romania: EUR 265 million, for a period of 25 years. Which is evident in the innovations so far, such as the over 70 cities with 5G/5G+ coverage reached this fall. At the same time, according to the latest ANCOM Netograf study, Orange remains the fastest mobile network in Romania, with average download speeds of 95 Mbps, and also has the fastest fixed internet, with average download speeds of 558 Mbps.
