Orange Romania now has 5G/5G+ coverage in 50 cities

Orange Romania has expanded and improved its 5G/5G+ services in recent months in 6 new cities, the most recent of which are Ploiești, Deva, Târgoviște, Călărași, Giurgiu, plus the expansion of coverage in Cluj-Napoca.
This new network advance comes as further confirmation of the renewal of the certification of the fastest mobile network in Romania. By the end of 2024, Orange had made the largest investment in 5G spectrum in Romania: approximately 265 million euros. After acquiring 25-year licenses in 2022, it became the operator with the largest spectrum portfolio, assuming the most obligations to cover the national territory. Currently, 5G/5G+ services can be accessed in 50 cities, with eight new localities added in the last six months. At the same time, in December 2024-January 2025, the coverage in Cluj-Napoca reached 100%, including in the surrounding towns.
These network updates result in faster speeds when browsing the internet on mobile devices: applications, websites and smart home devices can be accessed almost instantly via 5G/5G+ technology; video streaming now has much higher quality, files can be transmitted much faster. But the new technology also translates into much greater connection stability in crowded places. Cluj-Napoca is a good example of these improvements: the average download speed recorded is 260 Mbps, which means an increase of 32% and the upload speed increased by 73% (64 Mbps on average). One of the most important benefits that come with this coverage update is the increase in the indoor telephony and mobile internet signal: from 58% to 93%.
5G/5G+ technology also means greener networks. As the majority of traffic volume will move from 4G, we will see significant decreases in energy consumption, with up to 10 times less per bit of traffic than in the case of previous technologies. At the same time, on the one hand, 5G networks can also implement energy-saving methods when not in use, and on the other hand, they can decongest 4G traffic in crowded places. The efficiency of the plans to expand 5G/5G+ services is reconfirmed by the latest tests: Orange was once again recognized as the #1 network in Romania for mobile internet and voice services.
The independent external auditor LCC International renewed its certification as the best mobile network at the end of 2024. The quality of the network was confirmed through a set of performance measurements carried out in 40 metropolitan areas, as well as on the roads between localities, between November 11 and December 15, 2024. The tests involved monitoring performance parameters for voice and data services, specifically Voice over LTE, Voice over 3G & 2G, web browsing, video streaming on YouTube, file download and upload services via HTTP protocol. The measurements were carried out on smartphones compatible with 5G/4G+/4G/3G/2G networks.
A more efficient and faster network also means new connections, opportunities and communities. People with common interests, values and passions are closer through connectivity. As the new Orange campaign says, “passions go to the next level in the fastest network”.
“For Orange Romania, innovation has always been the constant element, which has meant access to the latest technologies at almost the same pace as other European Union countries. Therefore, upgrade plans will continue this year in several localities: 5G/5G+ expansion, 100% coverage in as many cities as possible, but also improving the fixed services network. In Romania, there are many cities that aim to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible and that have implemented many technologies that have been introduced into the national network of smart cities. 5G/5G+ allows the implementation of an entire ecosystem of sensors and smart devices: Internet of Things technologies related to health, energy, environment, road infrastructure, electric cars. At the same time, technology encourages home users to introduce more smart devices in their homes. However, a faster and more reliable network means above all better living and working conditions, an experience that offers more room for personal development, regardless of whether we are talking about passions or profession”, said Marius Maican, Technology Director Orange Romania.
