Romania must accelerate closing its digital gap with the rest of Europe if it wants to build more productive and competitive businesses over the next decade. In the coming years, the business environment will enter the most significant phase of digital transformation in the past two decades: the migration of software, applications, and data from on-premises infrastructure to cloud-based platforms accessed over the internet. This transition is being driven by major global software developers, including Atlassian, which is increasingly building new products and features—especially those powered by artificial intelligence, primarily for cloud platforms, according to the Romanian software company Life in Codes.

How the way we work is changing in practice

Today, many companies rely on software that runs on their own on-premises servers. Over the next few years, an increasing number of these applications will be accessed over the internet through cloud platforms.

For accountants, HR professionals, or managers, the transition will be almost invisible. They will continue using the same software, but it will receive automatic updates, new features, and AI-powered capabilities without requiring continuous investment in the company’s IT infrastructure.

This shift is also supported by the European Union’s Digital Decade targets. By 2030, the EU aims for 75% of companies to use cloud services, artificial intelligence, or advanced data analytics.

At present, however, Eurostat data shows that only 24.9% of Romanian companies use cloud services, compared with the European Union average of 52.7%, placing Romania among the countries with the lowest adoption rates of these technologies.

Moreover, with the firm deadline of March 28, 2029, when all Atlassian Data Center licenses and the associated Marketplace app licenses will expire and become read-only, we believe there has never been a better time for Romanian companies to make the move,” said Alexandru Constantinescu, CEO of Life in Codes.

What companies risk by delaying cloud migration

According to Life in Codes, organizations that accelerate their transition to the cloud will be able to adopt new technologies and AI-powered solutions more quickly, reduce operating costs, improve team productivity, and respond faster to changing market conditions.

Companies that postpone cloud migration, however, risk:

Software vendors are accelerating the shift to the cloud

As more organizations prepare to migrate to the cloud, demand is also growing for expertise in planning and delivering these complex projects.

Atlassian has announced the gradual end of support for its Data Center products, which will reach end of life in March 2029. The transition is already underway: since March 2026, new Data Center licenses have no longer been available to new customers, and from March 2028, the sale of new Data Center licenses for existing customers will also end. After March 2029, customers will receive the latest product innovations exclusively through the Cloud platform.

This decision is part of Atlassian’s global cloud-first strategy. According to the company, 99% of its more than 300,000 customers already use Atlassian Cloud, and nearly all new customers choose the cloud deployment model. The latest innovations—including the AI-powered Rovo platform, advanced search capabilities, intelligent automation, Teamwork Graph, and analytics tools that help organizations make faster decisions and improve productivity—are all being developed primarily for the Cloud platform.

Atlassian estimates that organizations migrating to the cloud gain faster access to innovation, lower operational costs, and accelerated project delivery through the adoption of AI-powered technologies.
