Founded during the pandemic, as gaming grew rapidly and concerns around severe toxicity in online voice chat became increasingly visible, VoicePatrol is tackling one of the most difficult challenges in multiplayer gaming: moderating voice communication without disrupting the competitive interaction and social dynamics that are central to gaming communities. Studios that rely primarily on monitoring only the players manually reported by others, and on random spot checks miss the vast majority of severe toxicity incidents, according to VoicePatrol\u2019s data gathered across games using its technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was a teenager who used bad language in video games too. Because, come on, it\u2019s fun. But there\u2019s a difference between that and being genuinely insufferable. Or an actual predator. Studios hire us to find those people. We have three rules. First, we monitor public lobbies only. Second, there are no automatic kicks or bans, those decisions should be made manually after human review. Third, audio is deleted after processing, except in the most severe cases, where it can be retained as evidence. The machine-learning challenge is really twofold. We need to leave normal banter and competitive trash talk alone and that requires a deep understanding of gaming context, not just simple keyword matching. Then we need to run everything fast and cheaply on our own AWS infrastructure, without third-party API calls adding latency and cost. VoicePatrol\u2019s approach starts by showing gaming studios the true scale of severe toxicity in their voice chat. Through a free two-week audit based on live monitoring and flagging of public lobbies, the company reveals the gap between the incidents studios already know about and those that go undetected.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the scale of the problem has been established, studios can deploy automated interventions designed to change player behaviour. These interventions reduce repeated violations and allow studios to avoid unnecessarily aggressive measures against players who are not inherently bad people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VoicePatrol is delivering a rare combination of stronger moderation, broader coverage, and lower costs. Within three weeks of enabling auto-warn and auto-mute, every customer saw a 55%-75% reduction in severe toxicity across public lobbies. Customers switching from competitors report fewer cases where players are incorrectly flagged, while one customer saw a 3 times increase in correctly identified severe toxicity on day one. At the same time, customers cut monthly moderation costs by 30%-70% while expanding coverage to 100% of public lobbies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VoicePatrol\u2019s long-term goal is to keep sharpening machine-learning accuracy as gaming language evolves, while cutting the infrastructure costs of live moderation.
