Romania ranks last in the European Union in terms of working life expectancy, with an estimated 32.7 years in 2025, up from 32.2 years in 2023, according to data published today by Eurostat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The working life expectancy indicator is an estimate of the number of years a 15-year-old will spend in the workforce, i.e. employed or unemployed, over their lifetime. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This indicator aims to provide a different perspective on the labour market, by looking at the entire life cycle of people in the workforce, rather than at specific life cycle states such as youth unemployment or early retirement from the workforce,’ Eurostat wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Eutrostat data, people aged 15 and over in the EU were expected to work for an average of 37.5 years in 2025, compared to 37.2 years in 2024. However, there are significant differences among EU member states. In seven member states, all Nordic countries, the average expected length of working life is 40 years or more: the Netherlands (44 years), Sweden (43.4), Denmark (42.6), Estonia (41.5), Ireland (40.7), Germany (40.2) and Finland (40.1). In contrast, Romania (32.7 years), Italy (33) and Bulgaria (34.6) have the shortest working lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gender breakdown shows that men have a longer working life than women. In 2025, men in the EU were expected to work an average of 39.5 years, with the longest working lives recorded for men in the Netherlands (45.9 years), Sweden and Denmark (both 44.5 years) and Ireland (43.4 years). The shortest working lives for men are in Bulgaria (35.9 years), Romania (36 years) and Croatia (36.3 years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For women, the average expected working life in the EU is 35.4 years. The longest were recorded in Sweden (42.3 years), the Netherlands (41.9 years) and Estonia (41.8 years). The shortest were in Italy (28.4 years), Romania (29.1 years) and Greece (31.8 years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compared to 2016, the expected length of working life in the EU increased by 2.3 years, from 35.2 years to 37.5 years. The gap between men and women in terms of working life expectancy also narrowed to 4.1 years in 2025, from 5 years in 2016. A decade ago, working life expectancy was 37.6 years for men and 32.6 years for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 2016 and 2025, working life expectancy increased in all EU countries. However, four countries recorded a significant increase of 4 years or more: Malta (4.9 years), Hungary and Ireland (both by 4.2 years) and the Netherlands (4.1 years). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, working life expectancy increased by less than two years in Romania, Spain, Italy, Germany and Austria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
