For the first time in Romania, the study aims to provide an evidence-based understanding of how educational, psychological, and social experiences during the first years of school, including academic performance, motivation, school integration, emotional well-being, relationships with peers and teachers, and family environment, influence the trajectory of a generation, from school entry through adulthood.

The recruitment phase began this spring, while the first national data collection is scheduled for early June 2026.

Countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the United States, and Norway have used longitudinal studies (studies that follow the same participants over multiple years) for decades to support evidence-based public policies in education. Through START-RO, Romania is taking an important step toward developing a research infrastructure comparable to those established internationally.

The 2026–2029 phase of the project is funded through a private grant provided by Accenture Romania and administered by the University of Bucharest Foundation. The partnership also includes direct access to the Accenture Romania parent community, contributing valuable data and insights that support the research throughout its development. At the same time, Accenture intends to leverage the study’s findings to help shape concrete actions, partnerships, and locally relevant programs.

“Education holds a central place in our agenda and START-RO reflects exactly how we choose to get involved: not occasionally, but strategically, with a long-term commitment to impact. This initiative has transformational potential for Romania’s education system, and supporting a project that will generate relevant data over time for better-informed public policies is a natural step for us. We are also pleased to be part of a collaboration backed by the highest level of academic expertise,” said Gina Sotir, Community Lead, Accenture Romania.

START-RO is coordinated by a team from the University of Bucharest’s Large-Scale Testing Laboratory, led by Associate Professor George Gunnesch-Luca, PhD, and brings together researchers from Romania and Canada, along with collaborators involved in some of the world’s most important international longitudinal studies.

“START-RO fills a structural gap. For the first time, education decision-makers will have access to Romanian data showing how the same children evolve over time — which experiences help them thrive, which experiences harm them, and which interventions work. This is the type of evidence base that European public policies have relied on for generations,” said Professor Dragoș Iliescu, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Bucharest.

Participation involves completing an initial online questionnaire, followed by short quarterly questionnaires of approximately 10–15 minutes throughout the school years and beyond. Participation is entirely voluntary, and all data is protected in accordance with European GDPR standards.

Families with children enrolled in preparatory class during the 2025–2026 school year can register for the study at: https://lst.fpse.unibuc.ro/startro.html

About Accenture

Accenture is a leading global professional services company that helps the world’s leading organizations reinvent themselves by building their digital core and leveraging the power of artificial intelligence to create value quickly and at scale across the enterprise.
