The study shows that 79% of respondents have already been using such solutions for at least two years, with notable benefits in writing code (44%) and quality assurance (38%) from the first year of use. At the same time, organizations are moving rapidly towards agency engineering applied to the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC): 72% anticipate that AI agents will manage most or all of the software lifecycles in the next two years, and 41% estimate that this transition will take place in less than 18 months.

The main trends identified in the report:

● Accelerated adoption growth. If today half of organizations consider agency AI an investment priority in software engineering, this share will reach 84% by 2029. Currently, 51% of software teams are already using agency solutions, and another 45% plan to adopt them in the next 12 months.

● Gradual short-term benefits. Over a two-year horizon, the majority of respondents anticipate slight (14%) or moderate (52%) improvements. However, a third (32%) have higher expectations, and 9% believe that the impact will be disruptive.

● Redefining priority professional profiles. If the last two years have been marked by increased demand for DevOps, cloud, and full-stack engineers, the next wave of demand will be directed towards AI engineers (51%), software architects (32%) and data engineers (29%) — a clear signal of the transition to a professional ecosystem oriented native to AI.

The report also highlights a significant gap between the perceived and actual risks of agency AI adoption. Although the experts interviewed identify organizational change management as a major obstacle, only 12% of respondents recognize it as the main barrier. In contrast, computing infrastructure costs and agent integration are considered the biggest challenges (44%).

This discrepancy suggests that organizations might underestimate the complexity of adoption and overestimate the speed at which they can scale these solutions. However, experts believe that in order to fully realize the potential of these technologies, companies will need to make fundamental structural changes, from software engineering teams to critical workflows, internal processes, and the software development lifecycle (SDLC). In the end, they argue that the transition to agency engineering will be worth the effort.

“The way AI is used in software engineering continues to evolve rapidly – from individual code writing to disciplined agency engineering, with already obvious evidence of immense productivity gains. The implications for the industry are profound, but technology alone will not deliver the promised leap. From our perspective, the inflection point of the new era of software development will come not only from technology, but from a complete rethinking of teams, processes and tools, seen as a whole,” said Serge Haziyev, CTO Advanced Technologies, SoftServe.

Despite anticipated and unforeseen obstacles, the experts interviewed argue that agency engineering will become ubiquitous and essential to software management in the future, going beyond simply accelerating delivery and reducing costs, giving teams the freedom to think at scale. As mentioned in the report, eliminating repetitive and routine tasks can lead engineers to explore alternative approaches, faster iterations of ideas, assimilation of knowledge from non-software fields, and a higher level of critical thinking.

The study’s findings were drawn from the responses of 300 senior executives in software, data and technology engineering, including CIOs, CTOs and CAIOs (Chief AI Officers). All respondents represent large companies, from seven diverse industries and six countries. Most of them have annual revenues of more than $500 million, thus providing a representative picture of how the world’s largest companies adopt and deploy advanced artificial intelligence tools.

To learn more about the future of software engineering and agency artificial intelligence, read the full report here

About SoftServe

SoftServe is a company specialized in digital engineering and technology services, which expands the horizon of new technologies to solve the complex challenges of today’s business and achieve significant results for customers.
