Evolving from consumers of resources to creators of resources

With more than three decades of management experience in the industry, Marian V. Popa thinks that the local market has to look to new ways of creating resources for the future - in terms of people skills and project addressability - and overcome its own comfort; otherwise, "the industry will become its own disruptor".

The statement has been uttered within Romanian Outsourcing and Shared Services Summit, organized this year at JW Marriott Hotel Bucharest on May 7th, 2019 in a joint half-day event: Romanian Business Services Forum & Awards, an arena where key players in the field can discuss the current challenges and opportunities with which the business services providers deal, also recognizing, rewarding and celebrating the success of the most prominent companies acting in the Outsourcing – BPO, ITO and SSC industry in Romania.

The event benefits from the support of Diamond partner Wipro, Gold partner Societe Generale – European Business Services, Colliers, Vastint, UP Romania, besides partners Telus International, SCC, Sea One Mamaia, Wave, aside the supporting institutions and associations ABSL, ANIS, ClujIT and HRS.
"It is very difficult to predict the future. Everything that goes beyond five years is pure fantasy. In ten years from now, everything that we see in the industry will suffer dramatic changes, so the industry should prepare to create its own resources and get ready for the future," said Popa. According to the manager, Romanians have always excelled in technical abilities, in math and engineering. To sustain this, he reminded that Romania established the first edition of the International Olympics of mathematics, back in 1958.

"There is a strong need for the local industry to make the switch from consumers of resources to creators of resources, by investing in the resources we need. And the training done inside a company for their employees is meant to create these resources. The people need to be free to take different challenging tasks without the fear of failure. We need to understand that the educational system in Romania is not only the job of the ministry, but the outcome of the entire society. Innovation is perceived as the Holy Grail but in fact, as an industry, we need to create our own resources and let people excel at what they do, by doing and learning," Popa added. He underlined the fast speed of innovation in technology. "By 2020, there will be one innovation per second at global level and this is why it is really impossible to predict the future. Today, we teach children that will work on jobs that have not been yet invented," Popa concluded. The manager's message to the industry is that delegating tasks to employees and letting them face and find the proper solutions is the best way to build future leaders.

Marian (Mike) Popa started his career in 1973 with the Romanian Chamber of Commerce, working for ten years in Publicom – Foreign Trade Advertising Company. In 1983 he became General Manager of Rank Xerox Ltd – Romania and Moldova and grew the company from 0.5 million to 38 million USD and from two to 1,000 employees. In 1996 he took over the general management for Romania and Republic of Moldova of ICL Limited. He grew the company from 0.7 to 28 million GBP and from 14 to 200 people). In 2004 he joined Endava as Executive Manager for CEE and went from (almost) greenfield and 40 employees to 700 people, four CEE branches, and 36 million GBP turnover. In 2014: he was appointed Director/ Head of DB Global Technology Centre in Bucharest. 900 people and 64 million Euro is the result after four years.
