TELUS International is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build the Buftea Community Center

During the 6th annual TELUS Days of Giving in Romania, 250 TELUS International team members volunteered with their hearts and hands, in partnership for the first time with Habitat for Humanity, to build the Buftea Community Center. The Center will provide after-school activities, workshops, hot meals and psychological counseling for 50 children daily and educational activities for more than 150 disadvantaged children every year.

2018-06-27 15:04:36

These 200 children are at risk of dropping out of school because of the social and economic problems affecting their families: low incomes, abusive and/or alcoholic parents, or parents who have emigrated and left the children in the care of relatives.

Through the €80,000 TELUS Days of Giving, which includes €40,000 in construction materials for the Center, TELUS International aims to facilitate easier access to education and social care, thereby preventing school absenteeism and improving school performance, as a means for a better future for children in need.

"Our approach to volunteerism is an essential part of our caring culture for the more than 30,000 TELUS International team members around the world. Together with our partners from Habitat for Humanity, we are committed to combining our time, talent and resources here in Bucharest to create meaningful social change in the community where we live, work and raise our families," said Jeffrey Puritt, President and CEO of TELUS International.

"At Habitat for Humanity, we strongly believe that by investing in education we invest in our future. Every person who is volunteering and raising awareness contributes to helping vulnerable children achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need in order to build a better future for themselves. We are proud to partner with TELUS International and work together in empowering the local community from Buftea. In June this year, 250 TELUS International employees will help us build a new community center meant to serve as a learning space for children from low-income families," shared Roberto Pătrăşcoiu, National Director Habitat for Humanity Romania.

The construction process of the facility will take two years. After completion, the Center will be administered by the Hercules Association, which is currently successfully managing a similar center in Costesti, Arges County.

TELUS International team members embrace TELUS' philosophy to ‘give where we live'. The TELUS International Europe Romania Community Board, launched in September 2016, distributes USD$100,000 annually to local non-profit organizations in Romania. In 2017, 18 non-government organizations were selected to receive a sponsorship. Visit http://community.telus.com for more information.
