National Statistics Institute: The weight of innovative enterprises scaled down 2.6 per cent between 2014 and 2016

Innovation in Romanian enterprises dropped in the period 2014-2016 compared to the period 2012-2014, according to the provisional results of the statistical survey on innovation in industry and services. Large enterprises were two times more innovative than small and medium enterprises.

According to data, out of 1246 large enterprises, 223 were innovative, which means that less than one in five large enterprises innovated. Out of 27.563 small and medium enterprises, 2702 were innovative, which means that approximately one in ten small and medium enterprises innovated.

The provisional results of the statistical survey on innovation show that, in the period 2014-2016, among business enterprises, the weight of the enterprises that introduced or implemented new or significantly improved products, processes and organisational or marketing methods was 10.2 per cent, 2.6 pp less compared to the period 2012-2014. Out of them, 4.8 per cent were enterprises that applied only new organisational or marketing methods, while 2.5 per cent were enterprises that introduced or implemented only new or significantly improved products and/or processes. Out of the total number of enterprises, 2.9 per cent introduced both new products and/or processes and new or significantly improved organisational and/or marketing methods.

In the period 2014-2016, compared to the previous analysed period, 2012-2014, the weight of the innovators decreased in two of the three categories. The weight of the enterprises that implemented only new or significantly improved organisational and/or marketing methods decreased by 1.5 pp. While the weight of the enterprises with innovative products and/or processes was 3.5 per cent in the period 2012-2014, a decrease of 1.0 pp was registered in the period 2014-2016. The weight of the innovators that introduced both products and/or processes and organisational and/or marketing methods remained at approximately the same level.

In the period 2014-2016, the large enterprises with 250 employees and over were more innovative than the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with 10-249 employees. Out of the number of large enterprises, 17.9 per cent were innovative, while, out of the small and medium enterprises, only 9.8 per cent were innovative. Compared to the previous period, 2012-2014, the weight of the innovative large enterprises dropped by 9.1 pp, from 27.0 per cent in 2012-2014 to 17.9 per cent in 2014-2016. The same downward trend was registered for the innovative SMEs, which dropped from a 12.2 per cent weight in the period 2012-2014 to a mere 9.8 per cent weight, a decrease of 2.4 pp.

Less innovation both in the industry sector and in the services sector

In the period 2014-2016, compared to the previous period, 2012-2014, in both economic sectors (industry and services) there was a decrease in the innovative potential of enterprises. In the industry sector there was a decrease of 2.3 pp, from 12.6 per cent in the period 2012-2014 to 10.3 per cent in the period 2014-2016. In the services sector there was a decrease of 3.1 pp, from 13.1 per cent in the period 2012-2014 to 10.0 per cent in the period 2014-2016.

Better co-operation between the Romanian innovative enterprises

Compared to the period 2012-2014, there was better co-operation between the enterprises; the weight of the enterprises that co-operated increased by 2.5 pp, from 15.4 per cent in the period 2012-2014 to 17.9 per cent in the period 2014-2016. Co-operation among the innovative enterprises in the industry sector was more active, with a weight of 21.9 per cent, while in the services sector the weight of the enterprises that co-operated in the period 2014-2016 was 13.8 per cent.
